Nokia 770 the Internet Tablet

nokia-770-2006The Nokia 770 has always been an oddity in Nokia’s line-up as it lacks a phone or GPRS or 3G data, instead relying on WiFi or a Bluetooth connection to another handset. And early devices had teething problems, as discussed in our review. But as it runs Linux, the open source community have been very busy porting applications to Nokia’s Maemo platform, which we understand has led to the development of other similar devices during 2006.

Originally announced almost a year ago, the Nokia 770 started to trickle out in late 2005. Nokia always said that there’d be a major software upgrade in the works – the 2006 version of the OS is it.

The software update is planned to be available during Q2 2006, and it can be downloaded directly from Nokia. End-users can apply the software update themselves from a Windows-based PC. There’s no word about a Mac or Linux updater, which is a little odd considering that this is a Linux device.
